Everything you need to know about certified translators

Do you want to hire the best certified translators in Stockholm? This article includes the most important information you need to know about certification, certified translators and the service they offer.

What is a certified translator?

In Sweden, a certified translator is a physical person who has passed Kammarkollegiet’s (the Swedish Legal, Financial, and Administrative Services Agency) translation certification test. Since they are translating legal and financial texts that are legally binding, the translator’s knowledge and skills need to be quality assured. In addition to that, when you hire a certified translator, the translator has a duty of confidentiality.

How do you become a certified translator?

You can become a certified translator in Sweden by passing a comprehensive translation test from Kammarkollegiet. The certificate is issued from a foreign language into Swedish, or from Swedish into another language. The translation test itself consists of three different texts: a legal text, an economic text and a general text. All three must be translated within a given timeframe. In addition to these, the candidates have to take an integrity test as well. Kammarkollegier also collects specific information from the Police and Kronofogden (the Swedish Enforcement Authority) to ensure the person’s compliance to the existing law or agency policies. The certification is valid for five years, after which it needs to be renewed.

In-depth knowledge in law and economics

To pass such tests, not only do translators need to master the Swedish language and another language, they must also possess legal and economic knowledge. In Sweden the certification is issued to and from Swedish and one can only be certified in one language combination at a time (e.g. from Swedish into English). A translator needs to get certified specifically for each language combination. Certified translators receive a translator’s number so that they can trace any translation they carry out.

What services does a certified translator perform?

Since certified translators normally have a good understanding of both law and economics, even if this is not a must, it is common for them to be hired to translate financial and legal texts such as companies’ annual financial statements. A translator can also translate certificates, grades, or other important and sensitive documents.

Why do translators need to be certified?

Not all translators need to be certified in order to do a translation job, and many skilled translators choose to never become certified. However, it is common for translators who focus on legal and financial texts to get certified. The reason for this is simple: it is of utmost importance for the customer that the information is translated correctly, as the translated document is as binding as the original, hence the certification becomes a seal of quality

Find a certified translator in Stockholm

There are several ways to find the best certified translators in Stockholm. First of all, you can go by recommendations since good translators usually happen to have a good reputation. You can also check with a translation company that offers certified translations in certain language combinations. Among our services, you can see which languages we translate to and from and which areas of expertise we have, such as law and economics as well as medical translations, marketing and many more.

Note that we mainly offer translation certification on legal and financial translations. In other areas we do not have certified translators at the time of writing, but we ensure that all translations we do are of the highest quality.
